Chapter Thirty-eight

The Orator

The Orator clung to a tree and watched the Prophetess. His Shadowvar skin blended in with the shadows. Usually that was enough. Usually he could stay still inside the shadows and, with his horns sawed off, all of him remained hidden, even from other Shadowvars’ eyes.

But here, so near the Prophetess, the dark was alive. It was the tide and she the moon. So he swayed with it, following its fluid movements silently around the trunk while he watched and listened.

She walked about the blessed dead—these Dorumai had died in service of the Truth. Their debts were paid and now they could peacefully await the return of the Lords of the Dark.

And she spoke of finding Genove LeGrande—the faithless scholar.

He’d known she’d arrived on Hayvonlar with him. The scholar had deserted the enlightened cause. Spies had seen him enter the Assembly Hall where the Prophetess had been taken. And caught sight of him again, leaving with the Prophetess and her crew as they fled Nokte Murosa.

It was one of the few times he’d orchestrated events and regretted their outcomes.

When he’d first given the scholar the idea of taking the mage’s power and using it for himself, he hadn’t known the extent of the woman’s magic. He hadn’t seen the magnificence of it.

The Night of the Soul had changed him. Purified his purpose.

This was a woman, not to be used as a tool, but to be a guiding light for the Dorumai.

So, he’d rallied his most loyal and followed Genove here. Usually he was as adept at unraveling unwanted plans as he was at crafting destinies.

But this time a monster had disturbed it all. Leveling his forces and making the Prophetess all the more determined to strip herself of her divinity.

Rage quivered through his body so intensely he almost growled and gave away his disguise.

How could someone so elevated by destiny be such a fool? How could she be so very, very blind?

When they pulled the scholar from among the dead, the Orator reached for the dagger at his belt and gripped the hilt until his fingers ached. All he needed to do is end the scholar and the knowledge of the Allarune stayed in the Orator’s own head.

But even with powerful purpose guiding his hand, the Orator could not ambush and kill the scholar now. Not with the Prophetess and her crew gathered about him. They didn’t hesitate to fight and kill. He wouldn’t make it within three feet of the scholar before he met his end.

And then who would guide the Prophetess? Who would prepare Nokte Murosa—and the world—for the return of the Lords of the Dark?

He pried his fingers from the hilt of the dagger, sheathed it, and clung to the tree beside him. No, he would strike from the shadows. That was the way of the Dorumai.

The Usaran lifted the scholar over her shoulder and the Prophetess led her crew where the monster had gone. After one of their own.

And the Orator followed.
